As a student in Camosun's Sport Management bachelor degree program, Brandon found himself drawn to a unique space where sports meet social change. His journey took an extraordinary turn when he discovered KIN 489, a self-directed study course that would become his path to international impact.
"I began to realize that while these initiatives were making an impact, the greatest way to create lasting change would be through the promotion of peace and unity," Brandon reflects. "Sport provides an exceptional vehicle for this purpose. It has the unique ability to bring people together, transcending borders, biases, and differences."
With the guidance of instructor Brianna Waldman, Brandon crafted a course that would take him to the , where 450 participants from around the globe gathered to demonstrate sport's power to transform lives. The event, where 94 percent of participants report positive life changes, became Brandon's classroom without walls.
His lesson came through an unexpected friendship with Jane Hato, a player from the Kenyan women's team.
"Everything in life is a competition, except football," Jane told him. "Football is a place to be free."
This simple yet powerful insight strengthens Brandon's understanding of sport's true potential鈥攏ot as a source of competition, but as a refuge from life's daily struggles.
鈥淛ane and I engaged in conversation and informal interviews, where she shared her story, her dreams, and her struggles. This experience inspired me to write an article titled , which was published on the Homeless World Cup website,鈥 Brandon recalls.

Through the One World Grant and the college's support system, what seemed like an impossible dream became an achievable goal.
"What made working with Brianna so unique was her truly inspiring approach," Brandon says of his instructor. "She never dismissed my ideas as too far-fetched and allowed me to be myself."
